  • Greatest Hits Volume II

Elton John’s Greatest Hits Volume II was released in 1977, as John announced he was retiring from performing. The album features a few of his early songs that didn’t make it onto 1974’s greatest hits compilation (“Levon,” “The Bitch Is Back”), as well as his mid-’70s hits (“Island Girl,” “Someone Saved My Life Tonight,” “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word”). There are also a few non-album tracks that had only been released as singles. These include “Philadelphia Freedom,” John’s 1974 cover of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” (featuring background vocals and guitar by John Lennon under the pseudonym Dr. Winston O’Boogie), John’s duet with Kiki Dee “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” and John’s cover of “Pinball Wizard” for Ken Russell’s 1975 theatrical adaptation of Tommy. This greatest hits compilation has gone five-times platinum.
