  • The Shins

It’s safe to say that the majority of people were introduced to the Shins via Natalie Portman’s gigantic headphones. In the 2004 film Garden State, her character Sam made Andrew Largeman (played by Zach Braff) listen to their song “New Slang,” swearing it would change his life. And the Shins, fronted by indie-pop auteur James Mercer, really did resonate with the 20-something generation; their albums Oh, Inverted World (2001) and Chutes Too Narrow (2003) became the soundtrack to all the romantic anxieties and growing pains of adulthood. What Natalie Portman’s character didn’t realize, however, was that Mercer’s bright tenor, wistful jangle pop, and unique melodic gift are even better on vinyl.
