A Universal Serial Bus (“USB”) adapter for turntables utilizes the USB’s capacity to establish communication between devices and a host controller, in this case a record player and personal computer (MAC or PC), respectively. The USB adapter allows the record player to convert tracks on vinyl records into a digital format for placement on a computer, and for eventual formats such as CD or MP3. Containing a built-in phono preamp, which is required for amplification and equalization, the turntable converts the analog signal from the cartridge into digital PCM. Audio software (e.g. Audacity) in the computer is then used to record the PCM and convert it into the required format.

Many companies market USB adapter packages for turntables, including Griffin Technology, Audio-Technica, ION, Numark, Stanton, Sony, Denon and Gemini to name a few.
