  • Pump

Aerosmith proved its extraordinary late-’80s comeback was no fluke by making a follow-up to Permanent Vacation that could stand up next to the band’s ’70s classics Rocks and Toys in the Attic. Released in 1989, Pump features the ubiquitous hits “Love in an Elevator,” “Janie’s Got a Gun,” “The Other Side,” and the ballad “What it Takes.” Produced by Bruce Fairbairn, the record has commercial appeal, incorporating keys and horns, yet preserves Aerosmith’s dirty core and gritty swagger. A favorite among fans and critics alike, Pump won Aerosmith its first Grammy Award (for “Janie’s Got a Gun”) and is tied with Get a Grip as Aerosmith’s second best-selling album in the U.S. Ambitious and hard-rocking, Pump is easily Aerosmith’s best album of the ’80s.
