Asobi Seksu
Asobi Seksu is a New York-based shoegaze band that recalls the heyday of 4AD, the effects-laden guitar of My Bloody Valentine, and the noisy brilliance of Sonic Youth – with a Japanese pop twist. Vocals alternate from male to female and Japanese to English, while the music incorporates both gossamer atmospheres and explosive guitar squalls. Formed in 2001 by singer/keyboardist Yuki Chikudate and guitarist/vocalist James Hanna, the band has alternated from a four-piece to a duo, and explored both bright and exuberant rock and more mature, shimmering dream pop. No matter what the style, though, Asobi Seksu’s compositions are seamless, and their lush layers and climactic choruses are absolutely dazzling on vinyl.
