  • William Shatner

Most of us know him as Captain James T. Kirk from the Star Trek series, but the actor William Shatner is also a spoken word artist. He released his debut album, The Transformed Man, in 1968. Inciting decades of parodies, the album features Shatner delivering dramatic readings of Shakespeare alongside dramatic spoken renditions of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and “Mr. Tambourine Man.” Shatner, however, wasn’t the only one from the Starship Enterprise to record an album, and in 1997 he was featured alongside Spock on Spaced Out: The Very Best of Leonard Nimoy & William Shatner. Then in 2004, Shatner teamed up with pop-rock pianist/producer Ben Folds for a collaborative album titled Has Been, which featured just one cover (Pulp’s “Common People”) alongside Folds-Shatner originals. His latest work is a space-themed concept album, Seeking Major Tom, that covers everyone from Elton John to Black Sabbath. Beam him up on vinyl!
