One Night with Blue Note
Right in the midst of his techno-funk period, Herbie Hancock performed a historic Town Hall concert in New York City that signaled the rebirth of his former label Blue Note Records. Bringing together more than 30 of the label’s most revered jazz musicians as well as newly signed artists, it is considered one of the most important nights in jazz history. The three hour-plus event was released as a film and a four-LP box set, with each volume also released separately. Hancock is featured on Volume 1, which starts out with his classic “Cantaloupe Island.” It’s given an edgier form by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, tenor-saxophonist Joe Henderson, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Tony Williams, and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. The second set features advanced hard bop, the third an Art Blakey reunion band, and the fourth has the all-star ensemble of Charles Lloyd, Michel Petrucciani, Cecil McBee, Jack DeJohnette, and Stanley Jordan. One Night with Blue Note is an essential addition to any jazz lover’s collection.
