  • River: The Joni Letters

An homage to Herbie Hancock’s longtime associate and friend Joni Mitchell, River: The Joni Letters was released on the same day as Mitchell’s album Shine. It features guest vocalists Leonard Cohen, Tina Turner, Norah Jones, Corinne Bailey Rae, Luciana Souza, and even Mitchell herself. Hancock provides new interpretations of her jazz-influenced songs, mostly culled from the period between Clouds and Hejira, turning some like “Both Sides Now” inside out. Wayne Shorter, who had collaborated with Mitchell on her 1979 jazz album Mingus (along with Hancock), plays here too. River won Album of the Year at the 50th annual Grammy Awards, beating out Kanye West, Foo Fighters, Amy Winehouse, and Vince Gill. It was the first jazz album to receive this award in 43 years, and the second in history. The work of one innovator inspired by another – both having ventured brilliantly into new rhythmic and harmonic terrain, River is further proof that Mitchell was a jazz singer at heart.
