  • Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington

Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington was released in 1957 as Monk’s first album release for Riverside Records. After critics labeled Monk’s music “too difficult” and not being able to reach the mainstream public, Monk’s album sales plunged. Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington helped give Monk the career boost he needed by introducing him to a mainstream audience with music they were already familiar with. Ellington, whose career was also failing, was in a way receiving public endorsement from the album’s release proving that he in fact still was considered relevant in the industry and went on to eventually reclaim his lost prominence.
