  • Breaking Hearts

Elton John follows up his successful ’80s comeback Too Low for Zero with his most rocking album since 1975’s Rock of the Westies. His first album without strings or horns, Breaking Hearts (1984) features just his classic band – guitarist Davey Johnstone, bassist Dee Murray, and drummer Nigel Olsson – with John playing all the keys. A must for any fan, Breaking Hearts yielded the Motown-inflected single “Who Wears These Shoes,” as well as the US Top-5 hit “Sad Songs (Say So Much)” and the UK Top-5 hit “Passengers.” Of these last two, the waltz-time “Sad Songs” is another tribute to Edith Piaf, while “Passengers” is a percussive reggae track dealing with racial tensions in South Africa. In addition to standout rockers like the Stones-y “Restless” and “Li’l ‘Frigerator” featuring saxophone from Andrew Thompson, the album’s few ballads, “In Neon,” “Burning Buildings,” and “Breaking Hearts (Ain’t What It Used to Be),” are also worthy of repeated listens.
