Based on 311’s reggae-rock sound, few would suspect that these ’90s alternative radio superstars got their start in Omaha, Nebraska. Formed in 1988, 311 actually took their name from the Omaha police code for indecent exposure. After relocating to Los Angeles and releasing a couple of nationally recognized albums, the band shot to the top of the charts in 1995 with its self-titled album (aka The Blue Album) and the singles “Down” and “All Mixed Up.” 311 continued to dominate the radio waves into the ’00s, and though their releases started slowing down they didn’t take a break until 2006. This break ended up being short-lived as 311 teamed up with producer Bob Rock soon after to record their 2009 album, Uplifter, which debuted at No. 3. Just two years later, 311 are back with the follow-up, Universal Pulse.
