  • Jack Johnson

Jack Johnson captures the spirit of surf culture in his music. But unlike the Beach Boys, Johnson actually started out as a professional surfer. From the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, he grew up on the waves, and probably would have stayed there had a surfing accident not left him landlocked. Shifting his focus to film, he produced two surf documentaries, contributing a few of his songs to their soundtracks. While the documentaries received their share of acclaim, it was Johnson’s laidback, acoustic pop/rock music that made him famous. With the help of J.P. Plunier, who had helped launch Ben Harper’s career, Johnson recorded and released his debut album, Brushfire Fairytales, in 2001. It went platinum along with the four studio albums that followed – including his Curious George soundtrack in 2006. An active environmentalist, Johnson has used his fame to support charities that promote environmental awareness in children.
