Formed in 1990 by singer/songwriter Jason Pierce, bassist Will Carruthers, drummer Jonny Mattock, and guitarist Mark Refoy after the dissolution of Spacemen 3, the English space-rock band Spiritualized has been dubbed “Phil Spector on acid” by the BBC. Though known for its psychedelic 120-musician symphonies – which beg to be listened to on vinyl – Spiritualized started out as a minimalist post-rock band. It didn’t start incorporating blues, gospel, and this wall-of-sound production until its 1997 masterpiece Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space. Another high point in Spiritualized’s career came with the release of Songs in A&E in 2008.
