  • Gov’t Mule

Formed in 1994 by guitarist Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody as an Allman Brothers Band side project, Gov’t Mule has become a music festival staple. Initially inspired by 1960s power trios like Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Gov’t Mule also drew on influences ranging from Nirvana to Neil Young to Black Sabbath, and incorporated blues and funk elements into its Southern rock sound. The group only released three studio albums before Woody’s death in 2000. After this, Gov’t Mule recorded two tribute albums, The Deep End, Volume 1 (2001) and The Deep End, Volume 2 (2002), with everyone from Flea to Bootsy Collins filling in on bass. Eventually, the band recruited a permanent bassist and continues to release new albums. Though Gov’t Mule is known for its live shows, this band is a whole lot of fun on vinyl, too!
