  • 15 Big Ones

A nod to the Beach Boys’ 15 years in the music business and the LP’s 15 tracks, 15 Big Ones is the first Brian Wilson-produced Beach Boys album since Pet Sounds. Released in 1976, it comes three years after the band’s overseas outing, Holland, and features covers of rock and doo-wop standards mixed with seven originals. The album’s opening cover of Chuck Berry’s “Rock and Roll Music” became a Top 10 hit, and the album’s closing cover of the Righteous Brothers’ “Just Once in My Life” should have too – its execution is stellar and features an emotional performance by Brian and Carl Wilson. Of the band’s originals, “It’s OK” is one of the best songs on the album, displaying some of the Beach Boys’ clearest harmonies. Al Jardine’s ornately harmonized rocker “Susie Cincinnati” is another notable highlight, along with the quirky pop of “Had to Phone Ya.”
