  • Keepin’ the Summer Alive

Bruce Johnston heads up production on the Beach Boys’ first release of the ’80s, Keepin’ the Summer Alive. The album features a mixture of new songs and unreleased tracks dating back to 1969’s “When Girls Get Together.” Another old treasure from the archives is Johnston’s 1972 “Endless Harmony,” the only track on the album to include Dennis Wilson (and the last, as he drowned in 1983), and 1978’s “Santa Ana Winds.” Of the new songs, “Keepin’ the Summer Alive” and “Livin’ with a Heartache” were written by Carl Wilson and Randy Bachman, the first taking the band’s sound in more of a rock direction. There are also a handful of Brian Wilson/Mike Love co-writes including the single “Goin’ On,” “Oh Darlin’,” “Sunshine,” and “Some of Your Love.” The added bonus of a Chuck Berry cover, “School Day (Ring! Ring! Goes the Bell),” closes out Side One.
