Gustav Mahler
In the late 19th century, Gustav Mahler was considered to be the leading orchestral and operatic conductor of his day. Now, after his death, he has been recognized as one of the most important late romantic composers of classical music. While alive however, his music was disregarded in Vienna but has since taken on a life of its own. Composing mostly symphonies and songs, his approach to classical music often transcended genres much to the dismay of critics. His famous work “Symphony No. 1” is best heard on vinyl, as all of his works are because it really highlights the intense and almost somber nature of his compositions.
