  • The Hissing of Summer Lawns

The Hissing of Summer Lawns finds Joni Mitchell retreating from pop accessibility into more ambitious, artful territory. Single “In France They Kiss on Main Street,” a jazz-rock song featuring vocals from old friends David Crosby, Graham Nash, and James Taylor, is followed by the idiosyncratic “The Jungle Line.” Far ahead of its time, “The Jungle Line” features Mitchell on Moog and samples a field recording of the Drummers of Burundi. Lyrically, the song pays homage to Henri Rousseau against a critique of the asphalt jungle. Mitchell uses vignettes to further examine materialism and suburbia, and she takes a hard look at artistic integrity on “The Boho Dance.” There’s a new maturity in the orchestral “Shades of Scarlet Conquering,” and “Shadows and Light” is haunting with its ARP string machine and multi-tracked chorus of Mitchell. Highly eclectic and largely anti-commercial, Summer Lawns is an important part of this artist’s journey.
