  • See What Tomorrow Brings

See What Tomorrow Brings is Peter, Paul and Mary’s second release of 1965 and a solid follow-up to A Song Will Rise. It plays to the folk singers’ strengths and retains their optimism for peace (most notably on opener “If I Were Free”) in the midst of the U.S.’ escalating involvement in the Vietnam War under the Johnson Administration. Standout tracks include the hauntingly beautiful cover of Gordon Lightfoot’s “Early Morning Rain,” an early version of Ewan MacColl’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” (which PP&M brought into the pop mainstream long before Roberta Flack in 1972), “Hangman,” and their closing cover of Tom Paxton’s “The Last Thing on My Mind.” Exploring songs rooted in gospel, blues, and Celtic folk, Peter, Paul and Mary also show their witty sense of humor on songs like “On a Desert Island (With You in My Dreams).”
