Massive Attack
Formed in 1987 by Wild Bunch alums Andrew “Mushroom” Vowles and Grant “Daddy G” Marshall with graffiti artist 3D, the UK group Massive Attack would help pioneer the trip-hop genre and pave the way for other influential acts like Portishead and Tricky. Their 1998 album Mezzanine was a landmark ‘90s electronica release thanks to the hit tracks “Teardrop” and “Inertia Creeps.” Featuring a rotating roster of guest vocalists over the years including Tricky, Tracey Thorn (Everything but the Girl), Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins), reggae artist Horace Andy, Sinead O’Connor, Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star), and Damon Albarn (Blur), Massive Attack’s dark and druggy mix of dub grooves, hip-hop rhythms, samples, and sensual melodies is especially hypnotic on vinyl.
