  • The Pharcyde

Hailing from South Central L.A., this group of B-boys (Fatlip, Imani, Slimkid3, and Bootie Brown) helped launch the underground hip-hop scene in the midst of West Coast Gangsta Rap with their light-hearted sense of humor, jazzy production, and innovative beats. Their 1992 debut album, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde, is one of the most influential alternative hip-hop albums of the ’90s. This was followed by a successful spot on the 1994 Lollapalooza festival and the sophomore album, LabCabinCalifornia. Along with Freestyle Fellowship and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, the Pharcyde helped pave the way for groups like Hieroglyphics, the Coup, and Jurassic 5. Listening to their classic songs like “Passin’ Me By,” ”Drop,” and “Runnin’” on vinyl is pure gold.
