  • Esperanza Spalding

The multi-lingual jazz singer/bassist Esperanza Spalding made music history at the 2011 Grammy Awards when she won for Best New Artist. The first jazz musician to receive this honor, she miraculously (and deservedly) beat out the more well-known Justin Bieber. Her modern take on jazz-fusion, which incorporates elements of Brazilian music, chamber music, and even hip-hop, also earned Spalding a personal invitation from President Obama to perform at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremonies and the White House Poetry Jam in 2009. Growing up in Portland, Oregon, Spalding taught herself to play violin at age five. She developed an interest in the upright bass in high school and pursued this at Berklee College of Music where, upon graduation, she became one of the institution’s youngest professors at age 20. Now 26, Spalding has three solo albums under her belt – Junjo (2006), Esperanza (2008), and Chamber Music Society (2010) – and another, Radio Music Society, on the way.
