    Kind of Blue

Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue is considered by most to be the greatest jazz album ever recorded. The influence of this album is massive. Not only did it prove to be one of jazz’s greatest, it also has proven to be a mainstream hit as well. There is no way around it: If you don’t own this album, you need to. It even cracked the top 15 albums of all time by Rolling Stone, coming in at #12. This album features a new style of jazz improvisation based on scales (rather than chord progressions), which became known as modal jazz. This was a completely different approach to improvisation that had been done before, making this another one of the movements in jazz that Miles Davis innovated. He would later go on to pioneer jazz fusion, and introduce pop and hip hop styles to his music as well.
