  • The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars

More commonly known as “Ziggy Stardust,” the 1972 album “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” was a concept album based loosely on the story of fictional rock star Ziggy Stardust.  Rising to the charts to #5 on the UK charts, it was a commercial success for Bowie and later made into a concert film of the same name released a year later in 1973.  With a theme of wild sex, drugs and love, the character of Ziggy was inspired by singer Vince Taylor as well as other influences.  Intended at first for a stage and/or television production, Bowie recorded the songs “All the Young Dudes” and “Rebel Rebel” initially as partial demos for the production itself.  The hit single “Starman” was the only song that made the charts but that didn’t stop the critics from claiming this album a total success with Time Magazine even naming it one of the 100 best albums of all time.
