  • Bon Iver

Bon Iver is the indie-folk project of Justin Vernon. Its name derived from the French bon hiver, meaning “good winter,” Bon Iver’s music has an introspective, wintery feel that permeates its many melancholy layers. Vernon recorded Bon Iver’s debut album, the intimate For Emma, Forever Ago, in a remote cabin in the north woods of Wisconsin over the course of a winter using basic recording gear and playing all the instruments himself. Released independently in 2007, the album gained national exposure that snowballed into it being re-released by the label Jagjaguwar in 2008. Gaining international acclaim, For Emma, Forever Ago was widely ranked as one of the best albums of the ‘00s. Its more orchestral, lushly arranged 2011 eponymous follow-up continued its success and was one of the top-selling vinyl releases of the year.
