  • The Flaming Lips

Formed in 1983 by Wayne Coyne, these Oklahoma weirdos have proved to be one of the most brilliant and daring bands of the past few decades. They captured the attention of alternative rock radio in 1993 with their loveably bizarre hit “She Don’t Use Jelly,” and went on to earn comparisons to the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds with their 1999 album, The Soft Bulletin, and a Grammy Award with 2002’s Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. Living up to the title of their documentary “The Fearless Freaks,” the Flaming Lips’ 1997 album, Zaireeka, is a four-disc set designed to be played simultaneously. Mixing pop melodies with blistering noise and psychedelic rock, the Flaming Lips are an audiophile’s dream; listening to them on vinyl is just as mind-blowing as their over-the-top live shows.
