Lotus
Lotus is a triple live LP, recorded during two concerts in Osaka, Japan during Santana’s 1973 Caravanserai tour. Initially intended for a Japanese-only release, the album features a selection of classics like “Black Magic Woman” and “Oye Como Va” off of Santana’s first five albums, plus eight new songs. Carlos Santana’s guitar solos reach phenomenal heights during the extended jams “Incident at Neshabur,” “Every Step of the Way,” and “Toussaint L’Overture.” Songs like “Samba Pa Ti” take on a whole new level of beauty in this live setting, as well. By combining their old Latin rock hits with the new jazz and spiritual influence of Alice Coltrane (with whom Carlos had been collaborating), this album brilliantly captures 1970s Santana. The live effect of Michael Shrieve, Jose Chepito Areas, and Armando Peraza on percussion, plus the dual attack of Tom Coster on Hammond organ and Richard Kermode on keyboards is out of this world.
