  • Santana III

Santana released its third studio album in 1971. Self-titled, it is often referred to as Santana III to avoid confusion with the band’s 1969 self-titled debut. Santana III is a more accessible, high-energy album that showcases the band’s trademark Latin-blues-rock sound. It is also the last album to feature Santana’s original Woodstock-era lineup. The addition of a 17-year-old Neal Schon as second lead guitarist (he solos on both of the album’s singles) gives Santana III a rougher edge, and the Tower of Power’s horn section turns up the heat on the frenetic single “Everybody’s Everything.” Other notable guests include Rico Reyes (vocals) and Mario Ochoa (piano) on the salsa-style “Guajira.” After the feel-good “Everything’s Coming Our Way,” the album comes to a powerful close with the roaring Tito Puente cover “Para Los Rumberos,” full of wild Latin percussion, trumpet, and cowbell. Containing “Toussaint L’Overture” and many songs that would become live staples, this is an essential Santana album.
