  • Welcome

Santana’s fifth studio album is arguably more of a jazz record with rock elements. It’s also the first to feature the new Santana lineup after guitarist Neal Schon and organist Gregg Rolie left to form the band Journey. In their place, Santana welcomes keyboardist extraordinaire Tom Coster, secondary keyboardist Richard Kermode, and the soulful pipes of Leon Thomas. Brazilian jazz diva Flora Purim also lends her operatic vocals to “Yours Is the Light,” and the instrumental “Mother Africa” features a sax solo from Jules Broussard. Carlos Santana’s guitar work is very passionate throughout, and the mood of the album reflects his spiritual side. It also reflects his recent side work with guitarist John McLaughlin (who plays on the instrumental “Flame Sky”) and interest in John Coltrane. In fact, Coltrane’s influence is all over this ambitious album, from the hymn-like opener “Going Home,” which was arranged by Coltrane’s widow Alice, to Santana’s peaceful closing cover of “Welcome.”
