  • Carl and the Passions “So Tough”

The Beach Boys’ eighteenth studio album marks a few significant changes in the band. Carl Wilson, recently appointed the Beach Boys’ musical director, recruited a third guitarist, Blondie Chaplin, from the band Flame. Drummer Ricky Fataar (also from Flame) stepped in as well when Dennis Wilson suffered a hand injury. Then Bruce Johnston departed during the album’s recording sessions due to a fallout with the band’s new manager, Jack Rieley. This shift in personnel led to a shift in sound towards roots rock: Fataar and Chaplin’s bluesy “Here She Comes” and country-esque “Hold on Dear Brother,” as well as Mike Love’s gospel-inspired “He Come Down.” Brian Wilson’s “Marcella” is an album highlight along with “All This Is That,” arranged by Carl. While he couldn’t play drums on the album, Dennis closes So Tough with a heart-wrenching vocal performance on “Make It Good” and “Cuddle Up.”
