  • Hotel California

While critics classify Desperado as a concept album, Don Henley saw the Eagles’ fifth studio album, Hotel California, as more of one. He described it as a metaphor for American excess and the dark underbelly of the American Dream. Others describe it as the greatest album of all time and one of the most successful rock albums ever made. It contains the Grammy-winning singles “Hotel California” and “New Kid in Town.” It also marks the replacement of Bernie Leadon by Joe Walsh, which took the Eagles’ sound further away from its country roots and into more classic rock territory, as evidenced by “Life in the Fast Lane.” Henley’s voice is dominant on the album, and to this day Glenn Frey refers to “The Last Resort” as Henley’s greatest work. Also of note, “Try and Love Again” is Randy Meisner’s last Eagles contribution, as he would quit the band the following year.
