  • Deftones

Formed in Sacramento in the late 1980s, the Deftones became a major force on the ’90s alternative metal scene with their mix of aggression and atmosphere. Their 1995 major label debut Adrenaline cultivated a huge underground fan base, but it was their third album, White Pony (2000), that broke the mold by incorporating new wave, shoegaze, and trip-hop elements. Influenced as much by the Cure and the Smiths as Anthrax, frontman Chino Moreno, guitarist Stephen Carpenter, drummer Abe Cunningham, bassist Chi Cheng (later replaced by Sergio Vega), and keyboardist/turntablist Frank Delgado have brought texture, brooding melodies, and brilliant compositions into the genre of metal. It’s no wonder that bands like Muse name them as a major influence, and there’s no question as to how incredible they sound on vinyl.
