Mastodon’s music sounds as monstrous as the band’s name, but these sludge-metal/stoner-rock titans have what few others possess: crossover appeal. Perhaps it’s their literate lyrics, shifting tempos, meaty yet melodically complex guitars, thundering drums, or innovative blend of progressive metal; whatever the case, this Atlanta four-piece has become one of the preeminent metal acts of the 21st century, loved by both metal and non-metal fans alike. Their ambitious 2004 album Leviathan, based on Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, was a critical success that transcended genre, and their 2009 concept album, Crack the Skye, is as menacing as it is intricate. Listening to any one of their five studio albums on vinyl is nothing short of intense and not for the faint of heart.
